What is Generative AI? A simple guide to how it works and the technologies behind it

In recent years, generative AI technologies such as ChatGPT and Gemini have rapidly gained popularity, transforming the way we create text, images, and other forms of digital content. While these tools have become an integral part of both our personal and professional lives, few people fully understand the technology behind them.

In this article, we’ll break down the key technologies that make generative AI possible—Natural Language Processing (NLP), Neural Networks, Transformers, and Large Language Models (LLMs)—and explain the basic concepts in a way that’s easy to understand, even without technical expertise.

1. What Is Generative AI?

Let’s start with the basics.
Generative AI refers to artificial intelligence that can automatically create new content—such as text, images, audio, or video—based on existing data. It can perform creative tasks that traditionally required human input.

Examples include ChatGPT, which generates natural conversations, and Midjourney, which creates images from text prompts. These technologies are now being applied across a wide range of industries, including marketing, education, healthcare, and entertainment.

2. The Core Technologies Behind Generative AI

Generative AI isn’t magic—it’s the result of years of AI research and innovation.
In this article, we’ll focus on how text-based generative AI works by exploring the main components that enable it.

The first essential step is enabling computers to handle the languages we use every day. Natural Language Processing (NLP) allows computers to process and understand human language. Without NLP, AI systems would not be able to interpret or generate text in a meaningful way.

Next comes the Neural Network, which forms the foundation of modern AI technology. Inspired by the structure of the human brain, neural networks allow computers to perform human-like reasoning and decision-making.

Building on neural networks, Transformers and Large Language Models (LLMs) serve as the technical core of generative AI. These advanced architectures enable AI to interpret user input and produce coherent, contextually appropriate output. Together, they form the mechanism that makes today’s generative AI systems function.

Let’s take a closer look at each of these components.

3. Natural Language Processing (NLP)

Natural Language Processing (NLP) is the technology that enables computers to understand, interpret, and generate human language. To process text like Japanese or English, NLP uses several layers of analysis, including:

• Morphological analysis: Breaking down sentences into words or phrases (especially important for languages like Japanese, where words are not separated by spaces).
• Syntactic analysis: Understanding the grammatical structure of a sentence (subject, verb, object, etc.).
• Semantic analysis: Interpreting meaning based on context.
• Sentiment analysis: Detecting emotional tone, such as positive or negative sentiment.

Generative AI uses these NLP techniques to comprehend user instructions and produce natural, contextually appropriate responses.

4. Neural Networks

At the foundation of modern AI lies the Neural Network, an algorithm inspired by the structure of the human brain. Neural networks can learn from data and identify complex patterns.

A neural network typically consists of three layers:
• Input layer: Receives data.
• Hidden (intermediate) layers: Analyze and interpret patterns.
• Output layer: Produces results based on learned relationships.

Through training on vast datasets, neural networks learn to recognize and classify new inputs.
For example, a network trained on cat images can identify new cat photos it has never seen before.

5. Transformers

Transformers are an advanced form of neural networks introduced by Google researchers in 2017—and they revolutionized the field of NLP.

Its key innovation is the Self-Attention Mechanism, which allows AI to evaluate the relationships between words in a sentence dynamically and determine which information is most important for understanding context.

This enables Transformers to distinguish between crucial information and supporting details—helping AI understand human intent more accurately.

Transformers also incorporate other sophisticated techniques such as Multi-Head Attention and Positional Encoding, greatly improving performance and scalability.

6. Large Language Models (LLM)

Building on the Transformer architecture, Large Language Models (LLMs) are trained on enormous datasets to understand context. Tools like ChatGPT are built on this technology.

Because they are trained on vast amounts of information, LLMs can respond to a wide variety of prompts—summarizing text, writing code, drafting professional documents, solving complex calculations, and more—all with a single model.

LLMs process user input through several steps:

1. Tokenization:Breaking text into words or characters.
2. Vectorization:Converting each token into numerical vectors for computer processing.
3. Context analysis:Understanding relationships among tokens to derive meaning.
4. Decoding:Predicting the next part of the text that follows the input tokens and outputting the corresponding words.
5. Iteration:Repeating this prediction process to produce complete sentences and paragraphs.

The key point is Decoding and Iteration. In an LLM, the model continuously predicts the next word that should follow the given input text, repeating this process over and over. Through this repetition, it gradually generates sentences that naturally align with the user’s intended meaning. Even when producing long passages, the LLM is in fact generating them step by step—repeating a series of very short prediction processes—to create text that accurately reflects the user’s intent.
